Resume Writing FAQ: Should I be concerned about a gap in employment?
This outdated cliché haunts job seekers everywhere — you’re not alone. The truth is, it’s 2021 — there’s nothing wrong with having a gap between jobs and it shouldn’t impact your marketability to potential employers. As the modern workforce develops a new vision for work-life balance, taking the time you need to grow, pursue passions, or take care of personal commitments is not something to hide during your job search. In fact, many employers will see your self-awareness and life experiences as an asset.
Keep in mind, most recruiters and hiring managers want to know about what you bring to the table — not why you weren’t working the last six months. If the gap in employment is a red flag for prospective employers, that should be a red flag for you. If it’s the right role for you — the gap won’t matter. Whatever your reason for taking a break from climbing the corporate ladder — use it to your advantage and walk into that interview with confidence.
